Pro-Ject Primary E Vinyl Turntable Product Description

The Pro-Ject Primary E Vinyl Record Player is a simple yet powerful plug and play record player. The elemental deck is well designed, cheap and has a minimalist platter. It sits on a thin, extended chassis that looks like a plank. It is an ideal turntable for anyone looking for an entry-level player for vinyl records.

Hardware and Specs

Over the years, Pro- ject has retained a grip on the turntable buyer market with over 48 models to its name. Pro-Ject Primary E model features the traditional block and wall-wart design. However, it has substituted the motor with a fixed cable and plug. This has enabled it to have a tidier installation and made it cheap. Users can also adjust the vinyl speed between 33 and 45 rpm manually by moving the belts between pulleys.

In addition, it has an 8.6 inches long aluminium tonearm that has sapphire bearings for smooth operation. It also comes pre-fitted with Ortofon OM 1S cartridge. The top stylus offers a natural, smooth quality sound and can be upgraded to 5, 20, 30 or 40 models if you wish to do so in the future. You do not need an anti-skate adjustment as the tonearm comes with counterweight already fitted. It also comes with a standard cover, which helps keep your chassis dust-free when you are not using it.

When using the Pro-Ject Primary E Turntable, you just need to plug the outputs to a dedicated phono preamplifier or any amplifier with an MM stage. The rubber belt runs on the outer edge of the platter. It requires some practice to fit the belt perfectly as you may find it snagging when you lift the vinyl lid. With time, you should be able to do it well.

Aesthetics

As said earlier, the Pro-Ject Primary E Vinyl Turntable has a simple design with a few add-ons on the platter. Unfortunately, it only comes in black colour, which looks elegant by all standards. While the device looks decently assembled, the plinth finish will show fingerprints after using it for some time. Besides, the chassis has corners making it look a little odd. Overall, Pro-Ject Primary E Turntable is not made with style in mind but should fit any style of the entertainment theatre at home.

Sound Quality

When connected to the MC/MM phono stage, Pro-ject Primary E Record Player gives a good quality sound, better than you would expect from such a budget turntable. You do not expect it pitch instability in the background and no disturbing noises in the background. Besides, you should pick up all the vocals, electronic tones and the bass for the music with fine detail. However, the bass extension is not as deep as we would have expected, but it is sufficient and recommendable.

Besides, the record player can play considerable poor pressing well than most high-end vinyl players. It can also handle records with significant surface damage without bringing up any tracking errors. The player adds some crispness to low tones so that the music does not sound too warm or sluggish. On the other end, it has excellent pitch stability, which works well with high-tempo music by ensuring that it retains cohesion and order.

You can also play with rpm with ease by swapping the belt between pulleys. Ortofon cartridge is well-aligned but sounds best on the outer edges of the record. Overall, expect a superior quality sound to be able to enjoy the subtle tones in the vinyl records you are playing.

Pros:

• Ease of set up
• Quality sound and assured performance
• Great features at a reasonable price

Cons:

• All-black design and sharp edges make it less appealing.

Verdict

You can rely on Pro-Ject Primary E record player to play your vinyl records for a long time without wearing them out. It has also borrowed the good features of the old record players and infused them with the demands of the new age resulting in a flexible, resilient hi-fi turntable that delivers quality sound. At less than £200, it is a perfect entry-level player if you are not looking for automatic systems.
