The Rega Planar 2 is a fantastic sounding vinyl turntable which makes playing vinyl records for long periods of time very enjoyable. The controlled sound that the Rega Planar 2 produces, is exactly why I love playing vinyl records. It comes with the standard Rega carbon cartridge that took a short time to break in, which then brought a better resolution and defined sound.
The Rega Planar 2 Vinyl Turntable comes installed with a Rega Carbon moving-magnet cartridge. As most of you would already know, Rega vinyl turntables are NOT plug and play. Also, they do not have a built-in phono pre-amp. This means you will have to purchase a separate phono stage to connect in between the Planar 2 turntable and the line input of your speaker music system. If you have an amp with a dedicated phono input, then this isn’t a problem.
The Rega Planar 2 Vinyl Turntable is a great looking record player, it minimalistic, but looks modern yet it’s very elegant and looks great in my living room. The Planar 2 has a clean looking design and comes with a fresh looking white gloss acrylic laminated plinth, which you can also get in black gloss.
The Rega Planar 2 is easy to setup and use. All you have to do to get started is to put the glass platter and the felt mat it comes with on the sub-platter, then wind the counterweight onto the arm stub and set the tracking weight, which is around 2g for the cartridge. There is a marker on the counterweight that makes it easy for you to get the tracking force roughly correct.
In my opinion the Rega Planar 2 Vinyl Turntable beats it’s rivals hands down. The Rega Planar 2 is a well built and solid record player and if required, can be fitted with a much better cartridge, such as the Rega Bias 2, which you can do at a later date.
